Mark was laying
on his bed with nothing but his shorts on. His heart was beating so fast he
couldn’t count its beats and he felt ill.
That
morning he had killed a young boy. He hadn’t told anyone but Miriam, and her
response hadn’t been what he was expecting. Of course, in that game nothing was
as they expected. There was always a final twist.
-Well done-
she had said watching the small body black haired near the river.
In his
memories, she took a knife out from her bag and stabbed the corpse through the
eyelid, before removing the stained blade with a gross sound.
-Just
checking he stays dead, not like the girl I tracked and supposedly killed
yesterday.
-Was it
after or before Di Angelo’s went missing?
-Before–
was her response –You might not like it, but now we have one less opponent. Do
you know his second weapon?
Mark
nodded, before picking up a golden ring from the ground.
-It has a
tiny mechanism. When the finger that wears it closes, it shoots a small and
sharp spike that has to be poisonous.
-Which one
did he try to kill you with?- she asked inquisitive.
Mark
lowered the head and admitted:
-I’m not
sure if he was trying to kill me.
Miriam
breathed heavily and waited, but the response didn’t come until they were in
the shelter, sharing a bed together.
It had
happened when Mark went to the river to fetch water.
-I didn’t
realise that someone was watching me until I finished. When I turned around I
spotted a small boy with a childish face looking at me and trying to hide
behind a tree.
The boy
stretched his legs and came walking towards Mark.
-I told him
to stop, but he just kept repeating that he meant no harm. It was then when he
suddenly brought a hand to his pocket and tried to take out something.
But Mark
didn’t lose time. He kicked him in the chest and threw him against a tree and
before he knew what he was doing, he was holding a smashed head against a
bloody trunk. It was later, after washing his hands, when he remembered to make
the deep lethal cuts in his thighs, draining the blood in the current.
-Sometimes
you can’t be sure if they are planning to kill you or to become your ally.
Maybe his intentions weren’t to kill you, but that sudden movement was still
strange; you followed your instinct and you kept your life. And I’m grateful
for that.
In the bed,
Miriam hugged Mark tightly. She loved him with passion although she didn’t know
him well enough.
Mark put an
ear in Miriam’s neck and listened her blood rushing. Somehow it calmed him
down. Still, he didn’t feel prepared to tell her about his failure.
After
finishing the young boy, Mark had searched his pockets and found a dagger and a
ring, and in the other, inside the pocket the boy was reaching, a white scarf
with blue dots, the same Di Angelo insisted in wearing every night.
And what
had Di Angelo’s said when he first asked him about it? “My son wears one like
this on this game. I hope I will find him.” Only he would not.
Di Angelo’s
had gone as support for Miriam and Ana, and while Miriam was tracking the girl,
he had disappeared.
-Do you
have any news about Di Angelo?- Mark asked again, his fingers moving slowly
over her skin.
-No- she
lied –I hope he is okay.
But the
truth was that after tracking and wounding that other girl she came back to Di
Angelo and convinced him to help her carrying a second and bigger body of a supposedly
companion they didn’t know the girl had.
In some
sort of cruel way she wasn’t lying because as he approached to the false body
she hit him unconscious into the hole, before covering the body with dirt.
Finally she buried on the top one of Di Angelo’s mines and hided the spot with
some leaves.
-I hope he
is okay- she repeated hugging Mark tighter.
Naif.
Me ha encantado! Lo malo es que te deja con las ganas de leer más y más. Deberías continuar la historia, de verdad.
